K-9 units are composed of law enforcement officers partnered with a highly-trained canines. These specially trained dogs are bred or chosen for their intelligence and strong sense of smell. They are one of the fastest growing tools for law enforcement to use in the fight against crime. Canines can be used in narcotics, weapon, bomb, and arson detection, tracking, pursuing fugitives, and searching for missing persons. K-9 units are also used by wildlife and conservation officers in the detection of contraband game/fish, or just as patrol dogs or a combination of several specialties. The officers who handle these canines are more than merely dog handlers; they develop unique relationships in which the canines become a trusted partner. K-9 officers usually maintain 24-hour control over their canines.
K-9 Units Perform the Following Duties:
